Takagai Stone Masonry

Takagai Stone Masonry

A mountain village selected as one of the Top 100 villages in Japan

In Misato, farmlands and houses were created on steep land. Stone masonry was therefore developed to protect terraced farms and houses. The beautiful stone masonry is the symbol of life, culture and history of the area, and is what residents are proud of.

At “Misato Takara-sagashi Tanken-tai” (Misato Treasure Hunt Expedition), you can experience stone masonry techniques by actually restoring it.

Takakai is on the highest ground in Ogami District and is commonly called “Sora”. You can see a magical sight that looks as if stone masonry was floating in the night sky in the light. (It is illuminated in December.)

Selected as one of the “Top 100 of villages in Japan” in 2009.
