“Sudachi” (Citrus sudachi) originating from Tokushima has almost 100 per cent market share in Japan. Both in name and reality, sudachi is Tokushima’s representative fruit.
Its flower is designated as prefectural flower. The fruit has been loved for a long time for its characteristic refreshing sourness and fresh fragrance.
The fruits grown in greenhouses are sold between mid-March and mid-August, and afterwards, those of open-field cultivation are sold. A recent improvement of storage technologies enables delicious sudachi to be sold all year round.
The “Naruto Kintoki” sweet potato is one of the top branded foods representing Tokushima’s farm products. It is cultivated in quality sandy-soiled fields blessed with a warm climate in Tokushima Prefecture and the goodness of the Yoshino River.
It has a good chunky shape and vivid red skin, and its fluffy texture and elegant sweetness are favored.
Roasted sweet potatoes (a classic recipe), Tempura, ingredients for Japanese and Western style sweets are the best ways to maximize its flavor. It is popular among all generations, from children to adults.
The world’s largest Naruto Whirlpools are generated by the rapid tidal currents. The firm texture and nice flavour of “Naruto Wakame Seaweed” are nurtured in that atmosphere.
The vivid green color is the characteristic of Naruto Wakame Seaweed. You can enjoy the taste and appearance, which are the gifts from the sea.
Wakame seaweed is collected from nearly all coastal areas in Japan (except some prefectures), and Tokushima is the third largest producer in Japan. The good quality Naruto Wakame Seaweed is highly praised mainly in Kansai Market.
The high class local chicken, “Awa Odori Chicken” is the result of the crossing of Akasasa Shamo (which has been bred for a long time in Tokushima Prefecture) with White Plymouth Rock. It is named after Awa Odori (Awa Dance) in Tokushima.
The meat is low in fat and moderately chewy, and has a slightly reddish color and a characteristic of sweet full-bodied flavour.
It was Japan’s first local chicken to be rated by the Japan Agricultural Standard in 2001 and is distributed under strict quality control. Awa Odori Chicken boasts having the highest production volume among all the local chickens in Japan.
