Beware of international phone number scams!

We have received the following inquiry: “I received a call on my smartphone from a number starting with +1. When I answered, I was told, “Due to unpaid charges for the phone you are using, we are going to proceed with legal action. Please press [1] to be connected to an operator. I felt suspicious, so I hung up.”

「スマートフォンに＋1から始まる番号から電話がかかってきた。出てみると、『ご利用中の電話の未納料金が発生しているため、法的措置に移行します。オペレーターへおつなぎする場合は、[1]を押してください。』という音声ガイダンスが流れた。不審に思い電話を切った。」との相談がありました。

With the number of incidents of international phone numbers starting with “+” such as +1 or +44 being misused for special fraud increasing sharply nationwide, the National Police Agency has issued a warning not to answer calls from unknown numbers or call back.

＋1や＋44など、「＋」から始まる国際電話番号が特殊詐欺に悪用されるケースが全国的に急増しており、警察庁からも、知らない番号の電話には出ない、かけ直さないよう、注意喚起されています。

Even if you receive a call with an international phone number, it does not necessarily mean that the caller is calling from overseas. It is possible to obtain a number on the Internet or through an app, or to use a number obtained in Japan as an overseas number in appearance only.

国際電話番号でかかってきたとしても、海外からかけているとは限りません。インターネット上やアプリを使って番号を取得することができたり、日本で取得した番号を表面上だけ海外の番号にしたりすることもできるそうです。
