We have received the following enquiry. “I found something I had wanted for a long time on the internet, so I went ahead and ordered it. I paid via bank transfer, but I received an e-mail from the online store saying that the item was out of stock and that I would receive a refund. To proceed, they are asking me to add them as a friend on LINE to get the refund. Is it safe to do so?”
This is a new type of scam where the refund is supposed to be made through communication on the LINE app, but before you know it, you have sent money to the other party’s account using ----Pay (payment apps).
After sending the money, the other party’s LINE account is deleted and further contact is impossible, so you cannot ask for a refund, and you will be cheated out of your money twice, along with whatever you paid for the merchandise in the first place.
The National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan also advises caution, saying, “It is extremely unnatural to refund money through a payment app even though the product price was paid via bank transfer.” If you are told that they will refund you via “----Pay (any payment app),” be suspicious of fraud.
