Be Careful of Charges from Children’s Games

Advice was requested for the following case:

“I received a large bill from my credit card company for something I didn’t remember purchasing, .When I looked into it I discovered that my elementary aged child had used my cellphone and purchased items from an online game.”

The problem with this case is that the parent let their child play with their cellphone when their credit card information had been registered. Without the parent knowing, the child then made a variety of purchases.

　「クレジットカード会社から覚えのない高額な請求が届いたので確認すると，小学生の子どもが，私のスマートフォンでオンラインゲームのアイテムを購入していたことがわかった」との相談がありました。

　この事例は，クレジットカード情報を登録したスマートフォンを子どもに貸した結果，親が知らないうちに，子どもがゲーム内で課金をして起こったトラブルです。

It is important to discuss with family members about how to properly use cellphones and how purchases for online games work.

It is also important to properly manage one’s credit card and double-check the monthly purchases breakdown.

Depending on the game, parents can set parental controls (usage restrictions that are set by guardians), so make sure to utilize these features in order to prevent unwanted charges.

　日頃から，家族でスマートフォンの使い方や，ゲームの課金の仕組みについて話し合うようにしましょう。

　また，クレジットカードの管理については細心の注意を払い，毎月の利用明細を確認することも大切です。
