  • distance 10.5km
  • time required about 5 hours
  • degree of difficulty ★★

The sound of the river flowing nearby is soothing and the clarity of the water is amazing.

  • Suiibashi bridge is located on the pilgrimage route for pilgrims between the 20th temple, Kakurinji to the 21st temple, Tairyūji.

  • Tairyūji Temple is well worth seeing with its many awe-inspiring,large buildings.

  • Wakasugiyama cinnabar mining site was discovered during the cultivation of mikan, and became known as a mercury-red mining site.

  • Omatsu Daigongen is famous as one of Japan's three most mysterious cat tales, along with Arima and Nabeshima's cat riots.

  • The longest cable car route in western Japan runs 2,775 meters from Tairyūji temple to Washinosato station in Naka town.

As you walk across the Suiibashi Bridge, have a look at the beautiful deep green Nakagawa River. Soon afterward the scenery changes to deep mountains, and a little further on you will reach the Wakasugiyama Ruins, where cinnabar was once mined. Cinnabar is the raw material for vermilion, which was valued as a pigment in ancient times. A stone mortar and pestle used to refine cinnabar, as well as pottery, have been unearthed at this site. This part of the trail is called “henro korogashi,”(lit: a place where pilgrims fall down) because it is so steep, so take your time and be careful. After a hard climb up, you will arrive at Tairyūji Temple, the 21st temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage route. On the spacious grounds there are many ancient cedars said to be several hundred years old, as well as various buildings and structures, including the Niōmon main gate, the Rokkaku sutra repository, and the Daishi hall, all of which were rebuilt in the Edo period(1603-1868). After leaving Tairyūji Temple, walk on the road down the mountain, but be careful because there are places where there might be a lot of traffic.
