  • Omotenashi Koen (Park) was developed on the site of the former family home of Takeo MIKI, the 66th Prime Minister of Japan. In one corner stands a monument inscribed with his words and a hut for pilgrims.

  • The Niōmon main gate of the 8th temple, Kumadaniji.

  • In front of the Kumagayadera temple's sutra office is Bentenjima with a drum bridge.

  • Hōrinji Temple is located in a rural landscape and is believed to be a place of prayer for good health.

  • The site of a Akizuki Castle said to have been built by the Hosokawa family, who were chosen to protect Shikoku during the the 14th century.

  • The sense of accomplishment after climbing the long stairway to the final destination, Kirihataji Temple, is quite overwhelming.

The starting point is where National Road 318 and Prefectural Road 235, south of the roadside station Michi no Eki Donari, meet. After continuing along Route 318, the route enters the pilgrimage path that is lined with farmhouses and that leads you to three temples. The first thing that catches your eye is the Niōmon main gate of the 8th temple, Kumadaniji Temple, which has been designated a cultural asset by the prefectural government. Pass through the gate, explore the temple, and have a look at the colorful pagoda built during the Edo period and the two-story Sanmon gate. Continue along the pilgrimage route until you arrive at the 9th temple, Hōrinji Temple, which is surrounded by rice fields. Take a break here and enjoy the view of the well-kept temple grounds. After a short stop at the ruins of Akizuki Castle, which is said to have existed during the Muromachi period(1336-1573), continue on to the 10th temple, Kirihataji Temple, where a statue of Kannon(Goddess of Mercy) stands near the top of 333 stone steps leading up to the temple.
